Managing performance is vital if you want your people to grow, so your business can grow. You need to know how well your people are performing, just as much as you need to know how the business is doing. The two are integrally linked. For motivation, your people also need to know what is expected of them and how they are doing.
Performance management requires a process that regularly measures achievement against set targets and identifies and remedies any shortfalls against those targets. Application of that process has to be consistent and fair, whilst recognising individual needs. This can be a tricky balance. You may like to consider your own performance in managing performance and developing your people.
“The minimum performance you allow is the maximum you can expect”
High Performance Cultures Don’t Happen By Accident!
The key role of a first line manager is to get the job done to the required standard, which requires determining and managing performance. The key role of a leader is to inspire people to form engaged teams, who want to achieve their best. Therefore, leadership represents a significant tool for businesses striving to sustain a high performance culture. This means you need to attract, motivate, develop and retain a competent workforce. Creating such a culture demands a continuous and focused commitment from the most senior members of your organisation. They need the right knowledge, skills and attitude to achieve this.
“A good manager is the conductor, and he knows who is out of tune, who is playing with real commitment, and who is simply following the crowd” Paulo Coelho, International Author
