Supervisor’s Toolkit
‘If a man’s only tool is a hammer, he tends to treat everything as a nail’ Abraham Maslow
How to change from being one of the team to being the ‘boss’ can be a dilemma for newly appointed supervisors or managers. Often promoted because they are good at what they do, the new job can be difficult for them without adequate people management skills as well.
Having a full range of ‘tools’ to draw on allows you to adapt to the situation, handle a variety of people and gain the outcome you need. The aims of this series are to:
- provide solutions and practical approaches to everyday situations
- create an awareness of the basic people skills required
- encourage implementation of those skills to make the role easier.
Every encouragement is given to apply the learning back in the workplace. It involves participation, group and individual work, for a more effective and enjoyable learning experience. Small work based assignments between sessions aid the application of learning.
This is a ‘pick and mix’ approach to the modules for a 3, 6 or 9 day programme, as most appropriate to the business. The sessions can be run at a time to suit your workload. As these align with the Institute of Leadership & Management Award modules, there is the option to achieve this qualification.

“Dorset Cereals first used Training for Results for a tailor made course in early 2008 called “Making it Happen”. We had recently formed a new team of Supervisors and Team Leaders. This group of individuals were full of enthusiasm and get up and go, but they needed some management tools to help them individually and as a team improve the overall factory performance during a time when the company was growing at a fast and furious rate! The course helped focus people’s minds on what is important in the work place and aided some great team work through the interactive nature of the course. I would be happy to recommend Training for Results.”David Pawling, Factory Manager, Dorset Cereals.
